April 17 - Cities can also be an important part of a person’s cultural identity, shaping their values, experiences, and way of life. Think of a movie or TV show that changed the way you see a specific city. How was that city and its culture portrayed, and did it present a full picture or a “single story”? Explain how this portrayal could influence how people view those who live there.

Response: When I watched La La Land, it was one of the first movies that I remember it being based in Los Angeles. I’m sure a bunch of movies I’ve watched were based in Los Angeles without my knowledge, but this one stood out to me. It’s been a while since I’ve seen it, but it gave me the idea that in Hollywood, you can do anything you want and be whoever you want to be. My idea of Los Angeles is that there are celebrities and upcoming actors walking around everywhere you go on a regular basis. My whole idea of this city is that its only aspect is film and acting when I know it is so much more than that. Still a really good movie though!

Summary: Today, we watched a video about confronting stereotypes through film analysis.

Reflection: Major cities around the US have so much representation of almost every culture, and I think it’s beautiful that people of different cultures can live amongst each other.

Response: My mother tells me this story every year on my birthday and cries without fail every time. I was born on May 10th, 2007, at Gwinnett Hospital around 1:00 pm. Sep 3 - Think about a moment when you challenged your parent(s)’ rules or expectations. How did you feel, and what was the outcome?

Response: The first thing I will say is that neither of my parents are strict in the slightest. I don't know any other kid who has this amount of freedom, but also love from their parents like my sister and I do. I'm allowed to stay out late (most days), I can have my girlfriend over whenever and wherever I want, I have free use of the car at all times, and ever since I turned 10, I have never had a bedtime. They're the type of parents to let me do as I please, as long as I am doing good in school and can stay responsible with the amount of freedom they give me. But even when I am slipping very badly in school (like last year and the year before), I've learned that they don't really care all too much if I am irresponsible with my choices and freedom. Discuss a moment in your own life when something you believed in turned out to be different than what you imagined. How did this realization shape your identity or worldview?

Response: A recent phone call made me realize that he will always be the same, no matter how much time passes. For the longest time, it felt like I was just interacting and talking with him out of pity, or so he wouldn't get mad that I wasn't talking to him. It had felt like I was finally getting him on the right path in life by having our relationship grow and heal, but it's clear to me now that he will still be the same man I've always known. The message of this whole story is more important than the details, but we had gotten into an argument about when my sister and I were going over to see him, and it was clear that he was having trouble understanding that we couldn't see him for a while because of all our events here (he lives an hour away in Dallas, GA).
