Nov 21 - Thanksgiving is a time for giving thanks and spending time with family over a nice dinner. Write about your most unforgettable meal.

Response: My most unforgettable meal at Thanksgiving was this year's Thanksgiving at my grandma's house. I had brought my girlfriend over for the first time for dinner, and she was really nervous to meet everyone and make a good first impression, but she did great. This year's Thanksgiving was one of our biggest (we had to get two tables!), and I had so much fun watching my girlfriend bond with my cousins over stupid stuff they had all seen online. Surprisingly, the dinner went perfectly, and nothing went wrong that night! This year's Thanksgiving was definitely unforgettable. Summary: Today, we did an assignment in Writable. Reflection: Having a nice meal with family members you haven't seen in forever is such a nice way to reconnect and have some good food as well.

Nov 19 - As Celie’s world expands in these letters, she begins noticing new things about the people in her life. Write about a moment when you suddenly noticed something funny, shocking, or unexpected about someone you see every day (a family member, a classmate, or even a teacher). How did that new discovery change the way you saw them?

Response: I had discovered that my mom doesn't eat breakfast in the morning, even though she makes some for my sister and me every morning. She told me that she does this because food in the morning hurts her head and stomach, but when I heard this discovery, it made me feel worried about her and her health because she may not be getting enough food throughout her day. This discovery changed the way I saw my mom in the mornings, because she does all this effort for my sister and me to get us out the door, but nothing for herself.  Summary: Today, we did an assignment in Writable. Reflection: Even though we see the same people every day, sometimes we don't notice little things about them until way later in life.

Nov 18 - These letters show how Celie learns from the people around her, even in small ways. Think of someone in your life who influences you in a positive, everyday way—a friend, relative, teacher, or teammate. Write about what you’ve learned from them and how their influence shows up in your daily life.

Response: I would say that my girlfriend is a person who influences me in a positive way every day. My family and I have never been good about getting to school on time. All my life, I have always been late to everything that I am supposed to attend. However, when I met this girl who is always on time for everything, never slacks off, and is always so many steps ahead of me, everything changed. Since we've been dating, I've started to get to things on time more often, like school, hangouts, dates, and stuff like that. School has always been a challenge for me to get there on time, even this year as well. However, comparing this year to 2 years ago (when I only went to school for 4 or 5 days out of the month of October). Now, I am terrified to be late to school, because my girlfriend will threaten me with not being able to see her that day if I am late to school. I think the fear of punishment from her is what gets me motivated, because she is scary when she gets mad. So yes, my...

Nov 17 - Creating a video is more than just placing pictures together—it’s about capturing a feeling. Explain how you tried to bring your assigned letter to life in your Adobe Express video. What mood were you aiming for, and how did your editing choices help you communicate the message or emotion of the letter?

Response: With my video, I was trying to show how letter 21 in The Color Purple starts out with tension but ends with relief and friendship. The letter dives into the confrontation between Sofia and Celie when Sofia finds out that Celie told Harpo to beat her, and they end up making up about the whole situation while becoming closer as friends. The videos from Adobe that I put into my video helped represent the specific quote's emotion and also the expression that the character would be showing. The music was hopeful, as it represented the hope of a new friendship between Celie and Sofia. Summary: Today, we showed our video presentations. Reflection: Videos are a great way to represent and express yourself through a creative form. This very fact is why I love making videos like these so much.

Nov 14 - At the end of Letter 21, Celie and Sofia share a rare moment of laughter that softens the tension between them. Write about a time when you and a sibling or family member shared an unexpected moment of joy after things had been tense or confusing. Explain how that moment helped bring you closer.

Response: When my sister and I were in an argument about something petty, we eventually made up unexpectedly. This was when we were both pretty young, and we got into a lot of fights. I don't even remember what it was about, but we ended up saying some pretty hurtful things to each other and didn't speak to each other for a while. Whenever I get mad, I either play guitar or play video games, and at this time, I didn't play guitar, so I turned on my Xbox 360. I booted up Disney Infinity 3.0. Star Wars Episode 1-3 Edition, which was a game that my sister and I played all the time. She heard and saw me booting up the game and asked if she could join me. Of course, I said yes, and we played that game all night. Once we had to go to bed, we both said sorry and that we had a lot of fun playing together, and it taught me that it's always a good idea to make up with someone. Summary: Today, we worked on our video project. Reflection: It is always important to break the tension ...

Nov 12 - Celie tells Harpo to “beat” Sofia because she believes that’s how men control women, but this advice causes pain and conflict. Think about a time when someone gave you advice that sounded right at first but ended up being wrong. How did it affect your situation or relationships? What lesson did you learn about thinking for yourself?

Response: I remember in my 2023 Junior year that I came to my dad for advice on talking to a girl. My mom always tells me the legend of "Captain save a h*e", which was a nickname my mom and her friends came up with for him because he is always trying to save a woman from a tough situation in order to get with her. And although this nickname is pretty crazy, my dad definitely knows how to get a woman's attention. I asked for his help on getting a girl to notice and talk to me more often, and his advice did work at first, but eventually it backfired on me. I can barely remember what his advice was because that time of my life was so traumatic, but let's just say that it did not end well for me. His advice was the beginning of a domino effect that led me to getting my heartbroken, and taught me that I should probably get my advice on girls from anyone else except my dad. Summary: Today, we worked on our video project.  Reflection: When it comes to getting advice, we shou...

Nov 11 - Letters 11–16 show how relationships can be full of misunderstanding and pressure. Harpo wants love, but he also wants power. Sofia wants freedom, not control. Reflect on a time when someone’s desire for control hurt a friendship or relationship. What advice would you give to Harpo or Sofia if you could?

Response: A time when someone's desire for control hurt a relationship is when my dad got mad at my mom for making more money than him. As ridiculous as it sounds, this is a true story from when I was pretty young. My dad took a while to find out who he was and what he wanted to do with his life, but my mom had most of her life already set up for her. She was working a manager job at UPS, which was paying her fairly well, and my dad was working a cybersecurity job (which was the beginning of his cybersecurity career path), but wasn't making too much money. I can tell that my dad definitely has some insecurities and has struggled with his manhood in the past, because he just couldn't handle the fact that my mom could possibly be making more money than him. Eventually, my mom folded under the pressure of my dad and quit her UPS job to be able to be at home more. My mom ended up getting a stay-at-home job a little bit after this. If it wasn't for my dad's desire for co...

Nov 10 - In letters 6 -10, we see how Celie starts noticing the strength of people around her, like Shug Avery’s independence and confidence. Think about someone in your life who inspires you to be stronger or more confident. What qualities do they have that you admire and try to learn from?

Response: A person who inspires me to be stronger and more confident is my girlfriend. I feel like usually it's the other way around in relationships, but for me, my girlfriend has completely changed me as a person. Being with her has taught me what it really means to love somebody, relationship-wise wise but also in a familial and friend way too. For the longest time, I thought that I wasn't capable of loving anybody in my life, not even my own family. It's more complicated than that, of course, but being with my girlfriend has inspired me to become a better version of myself every day. Besides my mom and her mom, of course, she is the hardest-working girl I have ever met in my life. I feel like anybody wouldn't last a day living the life she is living, and that quality is strength makes me want to be strong for myself as well.  Summary: Today, we read letters 6-10. Reflection: We can find strength in lots of people and things, but how we choose to take those qualities...

Nov 5 - After reading the first five letters of The Color Purple, reflect on your thoughts and emotions as you experienced Celie’s early voice and struggles.

Response: After reading the first chapter, it was like I was hit by a train. The use of vulgar and raw language, the violence, the struggles, all of it was just so shocking to me. I had no idea that this was what the book was about. I can't even imagine what the next few chapters are going to look like. Summary: Today, we read the first 5 letters of The Color Purple Reflection: I feel like this book is going to make me feel very uncomfortable in class to read, but it will be good for my education.

Oct 29 - Tell me what is your favorite word RIGHT NOW? Why is it your favorite word and how often do you use it?

Response: My favorite word right now is genuinely. I think it has to do with all the videos online that I watch that use "genuinely" all the time, but I find myself saying it almost every day. I use it to express extreme emotion to a certain topic that I am talking about, almost like I'm saying "for real" or "on everything," which is something I used to say all the time. The word "genuinely" has spread around my household and my friends, too, as I am hearing even my close ones say genuinely just like I am. Summary: Today, we genuinely took the poetry test, which I did so good on (I think). Reflection: Studying all these poems has definitely helped me learned more words that I can genuinely use in my everyday vocabulary.

Oct 28 - Before the Civil War, most people saw nothing wrong with children working long hours. Over time, people began to see it as unfair and even cruel. What is something that society once accepted but now sees as wrong, or something we still accept today that might be viewed as wrong in the future? Explain your reasoning.

Response: Society used to accept the idea that something as simple as interracial marriage should be illegal. Our society is constantly changing and growing to become united, even if it doesn't seem like it. It was only around 10 years ago that gay marriage was legalized in the United States. Even just hearing that statement baffles me to think that it took our society that long to make something as simple as same sex marriage legal. If you look far enough, you'll find that society used to accept even more cruel and unfair ways of living. Just like how chimney sweepers were looked at like it were a normal and acceptable thing, our society is most likely accepting something that is also cruel and immoral.  Summary: Today, we analyzed The Chimney Sweeper. Reflection: Child labor has luckily been outlawed for 85 years now, but it's possible that today's society is accepting something just as cruel without a second thought.

Oct 27 - Blake uses the chimney sweepers to expose how society ignores suffering. Reflect on a time when you noticed someone being treated unfairly or saw a situation that didn’t seem right. How does this experience connect to the emotions or ideas expressed in one or both poems?

Response: My coworker, who I work with every Monday and Tuesday, has been getting harassed by the people working weekends. Every day when I come in at 12:45 PM on Monday, the cafe I work at is a complete mess from Sunday. I personally don't mind cleaning up after them, but it gets annoying after a while. I can understand if it was pretty busy that Sunday as well, and cleaning up after their mess is no big deal, but the problem is that they are doing this on purpose. The two shift leader girls who work on weekends (and are also dating each other) are the most petty and selfish people at our workplace. I don't remember why, but I guess my coworker got on their bad sides and is suffering the consequences. Every Monday, the messes just get worse. Last Monday, they had spilled a bucket of strawberry sauce that fell to the bottom of the freezer and ended up freezing over night. We had to take everything out of the freezer, wash it, clean the freezer, throw away everything that had st...
